Claret Cup Cactus 'Alamogordo'
Echinocereus triglochidiatus x
Various Sized Plants (Cold Hardy -15F!)
This variation is thought to be a hybrid of Echinocereus triglochidiatus and gonacanthus, producing a giant form of Claret Cup Cactus with dark red flowers in spring. One of the tallest of the claret cup forms eventually maturing to 18-24" high by as much wide. Perfect for USDA zones 5-10. The plant produces a large clump quickly and will generally have darker, shorter, and more compact spines than the White Sands form. Flowers will produce large, juicy, edible fruits.
These plants have been growing in our cold high desert climate for many years on our personal property near Bend, Oregon and have seen temperatures well below -10F!! Very hardy and easy to grow, moderate to fast growers, you will have a full plant in just two or three seasons!
Monthly deep watering from spring through fall will enhance its spring flowering cycle and help maintain good character. This is a must have for any serious desert or xeriscape gardener!
