Santa Fe Cholla Cactus
Cylindropuntia viridiflora
Live Cuttings (4"-6" stems) and Small Plants (3" pots) - Cold Hardy -20F!
The Santa Fe Cholla (C. viridiflora) is a rare endemic hybrid Cholla found in central New Mexico. The original plant is from Santa Fe, NM. Some believe this is a natural occurring hybrid between Cylindropuntia davisii and Cylindropuntia imbricata. Plants will eventually reach hieghts of 5-7 feet if left to grow and about 4-6 feet wide. Plants are true zone 5 for cold hardiness as the natural habitat historically got to -25F with summer temps reaching well over 100F. This plant has performed well for us but is best if pruned at the base to encourage a strong upright growth. Plants generally bloom from May-July and are a unique, robust, orange flower color. Very hardy and easy to grow, moderate to fast grower, you will have a full plant in just a season or two! This Cholla is well adapted to hot climate locations where it thrives in sun and with normal winter snow and rainfall, and low amounts of summer water. When it matures, it is a colorful flowering accent shrub for courtyard and southwestern plantings due to its large bright orange flowers. Monthly deep watering from spring through fall will enhance its spring flowering cycle and help maintain good character.
