Hard to find live trees of Trachycarpus fortunei 'Princeps'! The 'Princeps' or 'Stone Gate' eco-type is a Cold Hardy Windmill Palm growing in limestone cliffs in the Yunnan province of China near the Tibetan border and area referred to as 'Stone Gate'. It is a cross that is ornate and could be one of the finest garden palms available. Initially slow to get started this ecotype picks up speed of growth as it matures. These are already starting to show the distinctive signs associated with 'Princeps' including large, fan-shaped leaves that are silver-blue or silvery-green in color (especially on the underside giving it a stunning and distinctive look). The fan leaves are deeply divided, creating a graceful and ornamental appearance. It is hardy to at least USDA zone 7b, and parent trees have seen temperatures below 5F. These plants would make excellent additions to your hardy exotic plant collection, or just make a unique statement in your yard.
